Junk Parts Bin
Mfg. ID: RRCB-O-07
Series: Storage cabinet
Size: 2 3/4" X 5/8" X 5/8"

Introduction
Rusty Rail resin castings include a Storage Cabinet series. This crisp highly detailed casting is their 1/48 Junk Parts Bin. Even though it was created for O scale model railroaders it is perfect for 1/48 dioramas, and can even be used in 1/35 scenes. Inside or out of doors, this bin is convincing.

RRCB-O-07 Junk Parts Bin
This casting arrives in a heavy plastic baggie with a Rusty Rail label sealing it shut. It is sharply cast in beige resin. I found no flash, noticeable seam mold lines or air bubbles.

This parts bin is built of scrap lumber and has a floor level small box of parts cast to it. Good wood grain is cast into the exterior. Parts brimming over the top are pipe elbows and valves, gears, chains, hubs, angle iron, electric motors and many other odds and ends.

The casting quality is remarkable. The components are incredibly small and sharp. The undercuts are open and amazing.

Finish
I primed the casting with a gray spray paint. With deep undercuts I wanted to reduce light colors and flooded the bin with a very dark wash. Then I used a variety of colors to represent fresh through corroded metals. I varied the colors to simulate steel, iron, brass, copper, and aluminum. Several passes with paint and washes created good effects for the metal scrap as well as the wooden bin.

Conclusion
This bin looks like the chaotic bins and shelves I have seen in garages, shops, and maintenance areas. I think it can add a great deal of interest to a maintenance scene for any modeling genre: military; aviation; automotive; naval and maritime. You can judge for yourself from the photos whether it works for scales larger than 1/48.

I happily recommend this casting.
SUMMARY
Highs: Sharply cast details.
Lows: Deep undercuts are difficult to fill with paint.
Verdict: This casting adds great deal of interest to a maintenance scene for any modeling genre: railroad; military; aviation; automotive; naval and maritime.

Good eye there Fred. I am well aquainted with the guys in the R/R dept at my L.H.S. Stuff like this really helps fill in areas in dio/vign. You'll have to be careful about the time era because of the plastic jug in it, but a torn nasty tarp would take care of that. I'll be looking for this one for the large dio I've been working on for years. Will fit just perfectly into the warehouse. Thanks for brining thi to my attention.

Thanks Fred. That is a really cool item. It made me think of my dad as soon as I saw it. He saw some good in everything when it came to "good" junk parts. Thanks, Randy
