Here's the comparison shot:

Here's another shot of the turret with gun:

Note that the components in above photo (as well as the comparison shot) have NOT been cemented together (i.e. turret halves, gun). Only the turret's armor panels have been cemented on the upper turret part. I still plan to add several more armor panels on the turret.

Here's a shot of the scratchbuilt mantlet:

I planned to use the original mantlet but it looked inadequate and abnormal to use with such a big gun, hence I had to scratchbuild one.

I see you have left the Red Horde and joined the side of right and freedom!
Guess my Leopard won't have to worry about that nuke attack.

HastyP: Well, not really...... I'm exploiting the early start time so as to make room for my second entry - a SOVIET vehicle which will give the M1A3+AHAP a run for its army if ever it was really put to the field. Hehehehe

Now that's one big gun! Are you putting recoil spades and extra shock absorbers up front? Or maybe steel wheels on the first few wheels like some of the Jagdpanzer IVs?

Jeep: Nope. Just adding a mine plow at the front, thicker skirts, an additional and larger bustle rack, aft grill armor, more passive armor panels on the turret and hull front, Mk19 grenade launcher, additional .50-cal on the turret mantlet ala Merkava, additional panel for the ICWS ala M551 Sheridan, repositioned smoke grenade launchers... that's about it I guess.

Hehehe!

Seriously now, though, I'm looking for an appropriate name. Abrams is too 'soft'. Any other tanker general or general who has a connection with the cavalry, or lead tanks? Peferably a name that invokes fear, or appropriate for such a tank I'm building. Or shall I call it M1A3 Godzilla?

Lafayette Poole...amazing tanker. Abrahms got his name in because he helped spur on the M1 series tank.

Otherwise, they are generally named after american Generals...

Well, if this was a spawn of my coffee-deprived imagination, I'd call it something more fierce than naming it after an American General...

M1A4 Abrams Warrior
M1A4 Abrams Destroyer
M1A4 Abrams Punisher
M1A4 Abrams Conqueror
M1A4 Abrams "Big Stick", "Long Reach", "Big Fist", etc...
M1A4 Abrams Gladiator

'ya get the idea...

Now - back to my M4 LaCrosse Guided Missile System and M948 LARS...

Thanks for the name suggestions. I asked at TankNet also and so far the names given that I like are Forest, Buford, Mackenzie, Bastard, Ogre, Eisenhower, Genghis, and Hulagu. I might pick Buford. I'm also considering re-designating this into M1A2E1, rather than M1A3 or A4, since in the Twilight 2000 game, the M1A3 is a totally different beast than what I'm doing, plus mine is essentially just an up-gunned, up-armored M1A2.

I remember a few posts back some "talk" related to the pre-start start. As an alternative to the start before the gun fires approach why don't we set the timeframe to be longer? In a brief scan of other Campaigns there doesn't seem to be a rule that says we can't change the time allowed for the campaign. And since this would be a late changeno one who hed started already would be penalized.

My concern is based on the fact that I have a LOT I want to do for this campaign and I don't want to get an illegitimate jump on other particpants...but I do want enough time for a rather ambitious project :-) .

What do you think Gunnie?? Others??

As always this is just my $.02.

Well, never let it be said that I'm closed-minded!

I'll keep the provisos I setup for those wanting to get an early (4 July) start to extensive conversions and scratchbuilds - because to retract that now would be confusing.

Extending the deadline date does appear to be in keeping with past Campaigns - they tend to run a little longer than we originally think because Life creeps into all of our hobby pursuits. I'd be open to extending it until 31 December - but no longer. Lets keep 2004 for fresh new Campaigns.

No one says we can't do Twilight 2000 - Part Deux in the last quarter of 2004...

Returning back to my M4 LaCrosse Guided Missile System now...

I have a few ideas on some conversions that I would like to do, based on the LAV chassis. However, what I really need is a 1/35 scale piece of crap Ford pickup and double wide trailer so I can do a build straight out the "Airlords of the Ozarks" module. I won't be starting early. I am going to make the original deadline on the Barb campaign and finish the CWCO deal before the extended deadline passes.

Has anyone thought to extend the deadline forward? I mean from Aug 1st to Dec 1st or something? A nice LLLLOOOOONNNNGGGG time to build lots of goodies? Or is this against the best intentions of the campaigns idea, ie to keep things in a reasonable timeframe? I am thinking that with all the "revving at the startline" going on, pushing the start earlier might not be a terrible idea.

Yeah, Jacques, I am going to need more time already if I am going to scratchbuild a whole airship, plus some ultralights...

It's already been extended forward...

Everyone was allowed to start on July 4th - with certain restrictions. I posted them already...

Too soft?! This is a man who commanded the 37th Armor Battalion, 4th AD during WW2 and lead the attack on a German strong point in the village of Singling in the Lorraine area of France. This battle is still being studied today. GEN Abrams also took command of all forces in Vietnam after the Tet offensive and eventually became the Army Chief of Staff. The man had several Sherman tanks shot out from under him. His tanks were named "Thunderbolt", hence the decals in the Tamiya M1 kit. The first XM1 had his tank's name on it. He wasn't just another general, he was a tanker who didn't want us dying in a tin can tank like many of his men did. Every man who survived a battle in an M1A1 tank owes it to Creighton Abrams.

Yep - I believe Thunderbolt through Thunderbolt VII (don't think there were any more under Abrams' command) were Shermans. Always fancied modeling a collection of all the Thunderbolts - but haven't seen photos of them all...

Thanks for your input Sabot. I had the following name already in mind: Buford. But since you say those tanks under Abrams were called Thunderbolt, I might just change it into the M1A2E1 Thunderbolt in his honor.

GunTruck: oh please oh please oh please oh please oh please make 31st December the deadline of this campaign! I have not touched my Abrams/Buford/Thunderbolt ever since taking the pix of the gun. Been quite busy. Plus I want to make "amends" for building a Yankee tankee by building a Soviet counterpart - and more Soviet counterparts. :-)

31 December is the new deadline for the Twilight 2000 Campaign!

Just to get this straight, July 4th is the start for major scratch building and Dec 31 is the end of the build. Since I'm just getting back into building I'll probably stay pretty close to stock (although most likely something unusual) so is Oct 1 the "official" start date?

Also I'm new to this, (found out about it from Tanknet) is there a page with guidelines for participating, all I could find was the Campaign page and it doesn't have much. Any direction as far as photo records etc would be appreciated. Thanks

Hello Aaron.

few notes for you

The real start date is Oct. 1st....no painting until then. You could get a leg up building major pieces before that (Right gunnie? ) Once Oct.1st roles around there SHOULD be a folder for the campaign in the campaign folder area where you keep your building journal. Just take a few pics of your in progress stuff. Finally, once you are done, hopefully before the deadline, you just post a pic of your completed work. Then you get a pretty campaign ribbon in your profile (Ahh, the life! )

Pretty simple. You can also keep asking questions here until you feel comfortable.
