You would think that by 44 they would have been able to come up with a half decent tank

Did you read the caption that the test was stopped after it broke down after only 13 miles and concern for the driver.

I just read the plaque after checking out the interior photos. I was going to say it looked like it would be highly uncomfortable at least, but that ends up being and understatement after reading the results of the trial. The design criteria for this particular tank seem to have been at great odds with each other, and it makes one wonder if the people who came up with the specifications actually thought it through. It's awesome that this tank still exists and wasn't scrapped.
