So, as the Matilda heads to be painted and the Type 16 awaits paint, I am starting my next build. This one will probably take me the rest of the year but hey, mad not to start it. I have a couple of reviews with some scratch build improvements I will look to try (nothing horrendous I think) but I still think I must be mad! 14 sprues, 1 clear sprue, 3 sheets of PE. The biggest build I will have attempted. Only problem is, at the moment I have the wrong radiator (manufacturing issue on initial run) and no response from Thunder Models as to whether that are still shipping the replacement..

This will be a North African theatre build so that the Matilda can be mounted on the back...

usual sprue box etc shots...

As I am waiting to hear on the radiator I thought I would start with the (simpler?) trailer...

Looking forward to seeing you build this... I have one in the stash, along with some of Accurate Armour's 'extra' bits - tank tie-downs and the like.

Cheers Phil. Do you have the part number for the Accurate Armour set? Need to make sure the Matilda is properly tied down

THunder Models have a (slow) parts service here: http://www.thundermodel.com/Spare-parts-service.html

Top marks for actually making it available at all though.
My copy Part no 35200 already had it in the box.

thanks both... seems AA aren't shipping tie-downs and the resicast radiator/detail set is not available in the UK so would need to import at an extortionate cost... will see if Thunder come good.

Shes a complex beast alright. I advise double checking the fit of the cab onto the chassis before painting it. I had issues with the cab hitting bits of the winch and other items.
Lovely kit though.

thanks David. Leaving the tractor unit for now but would dry fit

OK, so started the trailer. The bed was very thin but with the first length-wise strut it has firmed up. Wheels done as well (plastic is fairly brittle so not looking forward to some of the fiddly bits and there are some large sprue gates & pour nubs around)..

rigidity achieved. Nothing really challenging at this part apart from he which at the front which was a tad fiddly

I am not sure what the current situation for you guys is, but Australia has suspended receipt of mail from several countries.

However, when I ordered the radiator part for my kit last year, I got no communication back from Thunder but it came within 5 days of order..... I hope you get yours just as quick.

We are in lockdown but not sure how that affects international post. I am in communication with them around delivery time - think they had some sourced in the UK when the kit was first released

OK, so more progress. Ramp in progress (just dry fitted to the trailer bed at the moment). a few little gaps but they are filled. Should've read the instructions as there are 2 pieces that go on either side of the bed under the bogies - just manged to get them in place and gaps filled - would've been much easier to fit before the bogies (as the instructions told me)!!!!

Thunder Models confirmed any replacement radiator would be after COVID situation clears up. Not sure whether to go with the wrong radiator or to wait (and probably start something new)

I'm not sure if they corrected the sprue part, other than including a separate part in the box, might be worth checking the sprues.

The corrected part 'W' shaped find has 7 fins closely spaced, the old part has 6 spaced fins.
[EDIT: I don't know if different models of the Scammel, (Arty tractor, etc.), had different styles of fins on the radiator]

nice... problem with Shapeways is that it costs more to ship to the UK than the piece itself ;-)

Erm, seem to have finished the trailer apart from 1 piece of PE. Still amazed how easily it went together, am sure the tractor unit will need more time but that is awaiting the correct radiator so could be months. Wont paint this until the tractor is done.

Looks great Rob.

Personally I would wait for the replacement radiator before finishing the combo, as it is a noticeable difference, but build it as you want and enjoy.

yeah am waiting - mostly as it is blatantly obvious right at the front of the tractor and, as the trailer looks so good I want to do my best work

have dusted this one off. Still waiting to see if TM can provide a replacement radiator - if not am going to do a sand "cover" which I would want to use to stop sand/dust clogging the engine during a sandstorm (no proof this was ever done but sounds feasible)

An engine... 27 pieces and still a few more (plus some very small PE). I am going to hold off using the radiator as long as I can just in case TM confirm they can get me one (there are enough components I can build up in the cab to give them a few weeks)...

still waiting to hear from TM if they will provide a replacement, the Shapeways one looks good but a little expensive...

it has a lot of smaller parts BUT on the whole goes together well (user error not withstanding). Think for the engine it calls out either the grey/blue or base vehicle colour (ie sand)... Quite like the idea of the blue if it is accurate...

anyway today's build completed the engine (barring small PE bits) and started on the chassis.  Didn't attempt steering, too much of a wimp  (engine just dry fitted for now)

I did find a couple of magically appearing pieces within the engine build. After much searching I believe this is correct:

More small components... ordered the recommended blue paint (think it will do for the SU-122 ans T-54-2 builds planned for latter - think their interiors have a blue part or two) but need to work out if I paint the engine now then look to fit and, if I do, how to mask when I paint the chassis etc
