Just a little example of what maybe the real story. I have a real good friend retired from the military medical area. He has a friend here in NC USA that is a nurse. So her and some of her coworkers took 5 test never given to a patient. They send them in and all 5 come back positive. They tried to inform the news. They were fired and threatened with arrest if they talk anymore about it.

You sure that's USA and not North Korea??

COVID 19 crisis is taking on alarming proportions in some countries. I don't understand there are so many peoples who are against protection equipment and behaviour.

I absolutely believe this to be 100% accurate. There's more going on behind the scene then we're being told. I've never have bought into this Covid 19 BS. I have many questions and there aren't giving the answers to those questions. The recent so called "spike" all you hear are more individuals are testing positive. Incidents like you spoke of reassure me that this is all about numbers and getting more and more positives. Is it political? My opinion, absolutely. I've said this from the very beginning. If there are so many new positives, how many are being tested and out of those test are accurate, or negative? The CDC and WHO have ZERO cretablity with me. For goodness sake Covid 19 has a 97% recovery rate! This Covid 19 is being used by the liberal DemocRATS to have President Trump destroyed and these individuals don't care what they have to destroy along the way to get power. This folks is the bottom line.

It hits very differently.
My neighbours wife was sick at home, really sick but not quite to hospital case level. He didn't get sick, at least he didn't feel sick. The kids didn't get sick either. The wife/mother was sick at home for about three weeks.
He works for a company who make filters for face masks so they all got tested. His test came back positive.
His wife had gotten it and got sick, he got it frm her but didn't notice that he got it. The virus triggered his immune system so that antibodies could be detected afterwards.
My daughter probably had it, she might have given it to me so I believe that I had it (felt slightly off for a few days). I did one of those quick tests which came back negative. Not conclusive evidence since a slight infection doesn't cause a large enough immune reaction so the resultant levels of antibodies is too low to be detected by the quick tests (not sensitive enough).
Some people win over the infection before they even get really infected so the secondary stage of the immune system never gets triggered.

My neighbour and his wife have approximately the same general health but their immune systems (genetics) are probably slightly different. There seems to be a major genetic factor in this. The level of sickness in different patients is hard to explain otherwise.

Another neighbours 35-40 year old son got hospitalized, she (around 73 years old) visited him when he was really sick but not yet diagnosed. She got it from him but only on the mild to medium flu level.

In Sweden 90% of the deaths have been elderly above 70 years old and half of those, i.e. 45% of the total deaths, were residents of care homes. In Sweden you have to be in really bad shape or demented before getting residency in a care home. We provide care to the elderly in their own homes before getting them "institutionalized".

The problem here was that the virus had gotten into the care homes before we knew that the virus had reached Sweden.

No my medical friend from what his nurse friend believes is there is trace virus on the swabs. The degree of how it hits you is how susceptible your own body is. Everyone that said they got sick had the test. Folks I know that didn't have the test are fine. Did Freddie Freeman have the test. If so there you go.

I agree with Phil, but I wondered how long this would go before it turned political. I’m a conservative, but I also claim to be an educated man (not to imply conservatives aren’t educated). So I might as well “ jump in”. It reminds me of the Vietnam war. As the death toll mounted, politicians debated. But the total dead have now surpassed all the US dead of the Vietnam war by a long shot (over 130K now, vs 56K of Vietnam). Over 1.3 million (In the US alone) infected and increasing every day. Many politicians seem to be the biggest deniers, for whatever political agenda they follow, even as Hospital ICUs reach capacity, and the heath care system is stretched beyond the ability to respond to “routine” emergencies. Many say “it hasn’t happened to me, or it hasn’t happened here so it can’t be that bad”. Still others shout “conspiracy!”. The truth is, every 100 years or so in human history, a virus or bacteria comes along to humble mankind, and we are arrogant enough to believe our generation is immune. Or politicians are to blame. Or we should have enough science to avoid and defeat it. The simple reality is that it’s here again. Virus’ fight to survive and they mutate. They don’t kill everyone, (because if they did, there would be no future hosts), but they kill and weaken enough to make us miserable. Then they recede, dropping back in the shadows to re-emerge with different features. We can accept it, and do something about it, or stick our heads in the sand and deny it. Read about the great pandemic of 1918, or all the great plagues of the past, and you’ll see many of those who died had no idea what was killing them, while others took precautions and lived (some of them). They didn’t always know until much later it was a virus, just like COVID-19 is a virus. Don’t be foolish, protect yourself, stay safe, and stop listening to political agendas. There’s enough evidence for smart folks to know this is real, it’s a threat, and we should be smart enough to protect ourselves. Don’t enable this killer by getting it. Stay home and build models if you can, if you can’t, social distance and protect yourself, don’t take unnecessary risks.

I'm glad we're steering away from politics here! (As my grandfather used to say, they're all bad or they wouldn't have got where they are given how tightly politics is tied to big money...) The Covid business is nasty if you're part of the small percent who get it bad, or worse those who get killed by it, so I'm happy to distance myself from the world and tackle my stash. So far I've finished three builds in the last few months, am a long way into a fourth, and have almost completed the CAD work on a set of 1:35 CCKW "banjo" axles and transfer box for Italeri and Tamiya kits. Any other time that'd be a successful YEAR rather than just a quarter! Sadly I can't see the show circuit opening up anytime soon so I can't display these new masterpieces to the public...

I´ve been very busy being one of these "heros" or "saviors" or whatever you call us. COV 19 is a real threat, kills people an average of 4 to 6 times the Flu does every year (That is, in developed countries, we don´t know the numbers in third world countries probably because nobody cares about) It kills mainly elderly and multipathological patients, but also overweight people in their 50´s doubles the rate for fit ones so you might be in one of the still to be be discovered risk groups.
In fact we know almost nothing about COV 19: We don´t know for sure its ways of transmission, we don´t know for sure the transmission rate,we don´t know for sure which are the risk groups (Well we know some but not all), we don´t know for sure which organs are affected and why, we don´t know for sure which sequels will leave and even we dont know how many strains are out there... So, If you care my advise, it would be use face mask FFP2-5 while outside, carry a small bottle of Hydroalcoholic Gel and use it often, avoid close contact with strangers and put your faith into statistics if you belong to one of the statistically safe groups; if you don´t be care until the vaccine is out.
The only safe measure is confinement, but economy can´t stand a year of quaratine so we will have to expose ourselves to save the Stock Exchange; here at Spain we had a extremly successful response to quaratine and now that the "New Normality" has started we are experiencing new outbreaks every day.... Good luck until vaccine comes, and please don´t let Politics interfere with common sense.

Essential industry here (a tool for the military industrial complex as my cousin told me), so no coronacation for me. Volunteered for 2nd shift when they split shifts for social distancing. Got a nice pay bump for that, but back to my normal schedule now. Haven't touched a model in a couple months though, nice weather means home renovations come first. Not totally unrelated to modeling though, once I get my library done, I'll have place to keep my finished models. Hope to be done with that room by the end of the month.

I only needed Glue and 1 - 2 paints in the last few months so I haven't seen much of an issue.

Went to Hobby Lobby w/ the Wife last week.
They had full shelfs. Nothing great but full.

Sheesh.

All those dead people really are dead. All those sick people really are sick. The things recommended to prevent the spread of disease really are effective at stopping the spread of disease. Those things are objective facts. To deny them makes one look like a lunatic or an idiot.

Now, if you want to say that politicians and news organizations report and discuss the facts in a way to support particular agendas, sure, it's their nature. However, when you go from simply saying that the facts are not being presented objectively to jabbering about how the facts aren't facts and don't exist, you are walking right into that lunatic/idiot mode.

Speaking of Hobby Lobby -
At the start of the outbreak I got sent to Pecos, TX on a job. The odds of getting infected out there at the time were ridiculously low. Cases were being reported statewide in the low double digits.
In search of more wholesome entertainment than the average SF guy indulges in, I drove to Odessa to Hobby Lobby and picked this up, since you couldn't swing a dead cat without hitting at least three of them:

After I returned home all of my military travel was cancelled, including Maple Resolve, which would have resulted in some great reference material. But I've still been able to teach MDMP at the battalion level via Microsoft TEAMS. The cool thing is, even if your camera is turned on no one can see what the hands are doing.
I branched into wooden models as well as a change a pace:

I have even been doing quite a bit of resin casting again.

And dare I say I may have even read a few books during that time, spent time with the family, and doing a hell of a lot more rowing on the water rower. Weren't we supposed to gain weight during this thing?

Kurt, Robert, valid points all. It’s nice to see folks occupying their time building models while social distancing. As for me, I’m doing the same. But I’ll have to take a break, since I’m having a hip replaced next week. Finally, they’ve freed enough room up in the hospital from all the COVID patients to at least do some other things. I’ve been waiting for this a long time, any longer and walking would be impossible. That’s what the social distancing and mask wearing get you— a bit back to normal and some extra space in the hospital so more routine things can things can be done. See you all on the backside of next week!

Good luck with that hip surgery!

Thanks Robin. I’m looking forward to it, a day without pain will be nice. It’s 1:30 in the morning here, and I can’t sleep because of it. But I understand most patients have instant relief after the surgery. I’m looking for a good nights sleep. Although late night modeling has taken my mind off it more than once, even that’s not working lately. I was scheduled for this back in April but COVID-19 took precedence, with social distancing, we’re now at a point where the hospital has opened up the schedule (although COVID cases are rising again). That’s the rub with this thing, it takes up hospital resources. I’ve been totally dependent on my wife and daughter to drive lately. You can’t imagine the complaining when I was looking all over the countryside for wood stain a few weeks ago. But if they needed a new dress or lipstick.... So it’ll be nice to drive again so I can get to my LHS—wearing my mask of course!

Robert, is that derrick one of those etch-metal kits? Looks like it might be motorized too?

My own time-benefit comes from working at home - saving me four hours of high-speed commuting a day among the clowns that make our roads so stressful. I get to reclaim my spare time, with the bonus of not being frazzled by the time I get home from my paid 8 hours! The Gov't here is calling for folks to start going back to offices just to save the jobs of all those coffee shops in town, but I suspect the ease with which so many "office workers" became "home workers" will signal a permanent shift in how society works, and we'll need to seriously restructure the economy compared to what it was. Now where'd I put that glue?...

Tom,
It is indeed one of those metal kits from Hobby Lobby. While it's not 1/87 scale, it's very close. I'd have no hesitation painting it and putting it on an HO layout. The only thing I"d do is make the well head out of cylindrical pieces instead of flat metal. The detail other wise is on par or better than some HO kits. That said, it's the only one in the whole line up I'd actually consider using for anything. I've even purchased a few more to fiddle with - adding different horse head designs and pivot points.
If you're looking for something motorized Walthers does make them. In HO an O scale. I think the O scale one could actually be used on an Iraq diorama as the real things come in so many different sizes.

But just to be sure, I did do a pretty thorough walkaround of one near Odessa and have started s 1/35 version. The counterweights are the most intriguing pieces with their details, but fortunately I have a good supply of different sized PE lettering from Accurate Armour.

Those scales running up the edges of the upright look like a real modelling challenge! I wonder if cutting up plastic rulers might be a way to go?
