1/48th Campaign Round-up

Background
With the German Tiger I Early Production (Kit No. 32504) Tamiya launched the first 1/48 scale armor model of the new millennium. Considered an aircraft scale and not an armor scale, most companies discontinued their 1/48 scale kits long ago and the scale got into disuse for armor. Since the Tiger, Tamiya has added many other vehicles to its miniature army and other companies have followed suit: Hobby Boss, Italeri and AFV Club joined the club and many resin manufacturers have jumped on the band wagon as well. It is considered a great scale for beginners and many aircraft enthusiasts enjoy a cross over in their favourite aircraft scale. Nevertheless, 1/48 scale has not yet made the jump to the so called more “serious” military modellers. That’s where this campaign got into the picture. The goal of this campaign was to give anyone the incentive to try out something new and see for themselves what can be done in this scale. I think we have reached that goal!

The Campaign
The proposal for this campaign was launched right before Christmas 2009. 6 days later we had the required 10 entrants and on 1 January 2010 the campaign was approved – 8 months before the official start! By the start of the campaign on 1 September 60 people had signed on, by the end of April there were 81. The campaign had an auspicious start generating 5 new pages of posts until the end of September and going on to 24 pages by the end of the campaign 7 months later (that’s 6 months with a one month and a few days extension).

The subjects entered were widespread: From the diminutive Kurogane softskin to the Jagdtiger. From a simple out of the box build to a resin build or a diorama with two vehicles and a house. From a WWI Italian air force truck to a Humvee. Unfortunately none of the Humvees made it in time so most subjects were from WWII. Altogether 6 very advanced projects didn’t make the deadline; hopefully we’ll see some of them completed here soon.

In all, some 28 projects made the deadline and their builders received the prestigious 1/48 Scale Campaign Ribbon. These were

Thank you to all the participants for their contributions! Special thanks goes to endrju007 for his design of the campaign banners and to wilbhi2 for his help with this feature. I’m confident that there will be a sequel to this campaign some day. See you then!
