A Cautious Look

  • move
Stephen titled this one ‘A Cautious Look’ and wanted to depict an abandoned Panther being looked over by American tankers. The model is the Tamiya kit and by todays standard still very good, the only modifications I made was to replace the barrel with one from RB models. I also replaced replaced the rubber band tracks with individual ones from Tamiya and finally added grills to the engine deck.

The model was built as per the instructions and once complete it was primed, then the base coat was added. The brighter green colour comes from AK interactive’s set titled ‘1945 German late war colours set’ red brown was added for the camouflage scheme.

The weathering was next to be done and in the usual way followed by chips and scratches etc. Stephen left the rear hatch open and dented the container for the barrel cleaning rods as a little added detail. The base used is by MiniArt and once built Stephen mounted it on an old picture frame and then primed it ready for painting. Stephen post shaded it with black then painted it using Tamiya red brown and then added a black wash to tone the colours down, dry some weathering streaks were added using pigments and oils.

The vegetation was added and that was it complete ready for the Panther. Stephen started on the figures, these are from MiniArt again and once built and painted were ready to be placed. Before that I went back to the tank and added some painted surgical gauze as cam nets , one around the barrel and a partial one on the rear as added detail. Finally the figures were added , these were chosen for their cautious look and placed on the base and finally pigments were used to blend everything together and that is the diorama complete.

Here's a dumb question: Why replace the barrel if you're going to cover it with net anyway?

I can feel a lot of tension in this diorama. Tank crews are cautiouly looking at the abandoned big cat worrying about the booby traps or ambushing. Definitely masterpiece dio.

Joepanzer, the net was a later addition, once the model was complete.

Incredible work, great story told here! If you don't mind me asking, how did you make the netting on the barrel?
MAY 23, 2015 - 07:02 PM
Cokiescool2 thanks the net is actually surgical gauze, soaked in pva glue, then when semi dry mold into shape. Just paint when fully dry.

Very nice work indeed. Not sure if the vegetation on the tank might be just a little bit too bright green, but that's a minor quibble really. It all works well and the Panther is excellent. - Steve
